Falls Church, Virginia's Yorktowne Square Condominium designers Building Logics Inc. awarded
North American Green Roofs Award of Excellence for Extensive Residential Category
(Washington, May 6, 2005) Washington, DC-area Yorktowne Square condo complex located in Falls Church, Virginia is one of six North American projects awarded a 2005 Green Roofs Award of Excellence. The 4,700 square foot roof system was designed to serve as a model of the benefits of green roofs for residential and business communities. Designed and developed by Michael Perry of Building Logics Inc., the green roof was the first initiative taken to implement an effective storm water management plan for the condominium site. Building Logics is a company located in Virginia Beach, Virginia specializing in various styles of green roofing systems.
The Green Roofs Awards of Excellence competition is part of the 3rd annual Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference. GRHC established the Green Roof Awards of Excellence in 2003 to recognize green roof projects that exhibit extraordinary leadership in integrated design and implementation. All nominated projects incorporate green roof technology in their design.
A green roof is a roofing system designed to support green space on top of built structures. They fall into two general categories: extensive (inaccessible to human traffic) and intensive (fully accessible). Some of the benefits of green roofs include on-site storm water retention, greater building energy efficiency and reductions in urban smog and air temperatures.
"This project represents an outstanding example of Green Roof design for multiple benefits," remarked Steven Peck, founder and president of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. "The exceptional quality of this year's winning projects demonstrates the dramatic progress the Green Roof design community is making every year in bringing innovative products to the North American market."
